What Happens If You Put Gasoline in a Diesel Engine? 

Putting gasoline in a diesel vehicle is one of those mistakes that can happen faster than most drivers want to admit. Maybe you are distracted at the pump, using an unfamiliar station, borrowing someone else’s truck, or trying to fuel up quickly before heading from Carson City toward Reno, Gardnerville, Lake Tahoe, or a job site outside town. The fuel tank can be drained, the system can be flushed, and fresh diesel can be added before contaminated fuel circulates through the engine. 

If the vehicle has already been started or driven, stop as soon as it is safe. Do not try to “burn off” the wrong fuel or dilute it by adding diesel. That can turn a manageable fuel drain into a much more expensive repair. Instead, arrange for a tow and have the vehicle inspected by trained technicians.
